God Versus Religion
Religion Vs. God Okay, I feel a good rant boiling up. And I am going to say a few things here that might upset a few people, but...what else is new?
Let me say right off the bat that I have nothing against religious people. Really. I used to be one. Honestly. Grew up Polish Catholic. Went to Catholic grammar school and was taught by the Sisters of Mercy. Went to Catholic high school and was taught by the Xavierian Brothers. Went to Marquette University and was taught by the Jesuits. I was an altar boy. Said the Mass in Latin. Priests would come over to my parents' house for dinner at least once a week. We even went on vacations with them. I went to confession every single Saturday, and I went to Mass and Holy ommunion every single Sunday. More than a few times in my youth, I stayed awake at night worrying if I was bound for Hell when I died. Seriously. All my relatives were religious. All of them. My grandfather thought that I was going to grow up and become a priest, and I almost did. When I left the Catholic faith, I did it amiably. I had nothing against the religion, or any religion, other than the fact that it didn't seem to fit into my life any more. There was no anger. There was no ill will. Hell, all of the people that I love in the world were and are religious, including my wife Mary Ellen. I started this post off by stating that I have a problem. That problem is with some religious people. (Did you see that I wrote some? Not all. Not most. Not religion itself. Just SOME religious people.) You see, although the folks I grew up with were religious, they were ... well... quiet about it. I don't mean that they were embarrassed by their religious beliefs. I don't mean that they wouldn't stand up for these beliefs. In fact, much to my Polish aunts' chagrin, just the opposite was true. If my Polish uncles were at The Pulaski Club on a Saturday afternoon, and some jerk at the pool table started bad-mouthing Father Stanley at The Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Agony and Disappointment, (or worse, if he even questioned the Papal Infallibility of Pope John XXIII), that fellow would more than likely end up with a Polish knuckle sandwich if he didn't "put a sock in it" when he was told to. When I say my relatives were quiet about their religion, I mean that, to them, religion was a personal and a familial thing. They would never post bumper stickers on their station wagons that said things like, "Jesus is the only answer." They would never even think about walking up to perfect strangers and saying, "So, tell me how Jesus is working in your life today." They would never dream of being so arrogant. At least not openly. That is not to say that they didn't think that their beliefs were good and correct...for them. (Oh, they believed that Catholicism was "the One, True Faith" and all of that stuff, but they weren't quite so... I don't know...angry, defensive and vocal about it. I guess.) But that was then. That was back in my childhood and adolescence. About a thousand years ago. Today, I find that religion is more competitive. Some folks today have the mentality of the zealots back in the days of the Spanish Inquisition when pagans were viewed as subjects to be won over, and if they couldn't be won over, they were killed. I do not understand why it is so important for some people with strong religious beliefs to try to convert the rest of the world. Especially those of us who are perfectly content living a secular life and going to Hell when we die. (That's not quite true. I think I believe in God. I'm just not sure, that's all. To be honest, I envy those folks who believe unquestioningly - to some degree. It sure would make life easier for me if I had faith like that! I struggle with faith. I'll admit it. And I don't mind somebody helping me out with my faith when I ask for assistance. However, I really have a hard time with people getting in my face and telling me that I am doomed if I don't see things their way!) I make a buck or two writing short stories and magazine articles, and I'm a stage actor, director and playwright.I live on a horsefarm in...
